The onboarding process for new associate faculty can be the key between a good online instructor and an outstanding one. The secret sauce is to provide support and guidance that goes beyond the fire hose of information experienced in their new faculty training. The first three courses are the proving grounds to help get past the virtual piranhas in the classroom. The mentoring program utilized by the BABA helps the new faculty feel connected with other experienced online faculty members who provide mentoring while they teach their first three online courses. Fostering Belonging Through Inclusive Assignment Design: Empowering Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education

In the diverse landscape of modern higher education, non-traditional students—those balancing multiple life roles alongside their academic pursuits—represent a significant and growing demographic. This presentation explores the critical intersection of assignment design, inclusion, and belonging for these students. We posit that thoughtfully crafted assignment instructions can serve as powerful tools for fostering a sense of belonging and promoting academic success among non-traditional learners. Drawing on recent research in inclusive education practices, we identify five key pillars of inclusive assignment design: clarity and accessibility, relevance and representation, flexibility and accommodation, support for self-efficacy, and transparent and equitable assessment. Through interactive activities and best practice showcases, participants will learn how to transform their assignment instructions to create more inclusive and welcoming learning environments. This session aims to equip educators with practical strategies to enhance student engagement, promote a sense of belonging, and ultimately support the success of all students, regardless of their background or life circumstances.… more
